I painted her room pink and bought her Care Bears toys.Īs it turned out, my daughter loved her Care Bears toys. She was a girl, so I dressed her in lavender seersucker sundresses. A few years later, my second child was born. I bought him Thomas the Tank Engine toys. He was a boy, and it was the late ’90s, so I dressed him in a hideous navy onesie emblazoned with “Little Slugger” or something equally conventional.
